that big city mercer.

mercer is very tired tonight. he had a big day. mom and dad loaded up the car and took a drive down to manhattan this morning (no traffic! 28 minutes!) to do some strolling, browsing, and leisurely shopping. first up though, was a quick bite to eat at swich, which was what appeared to be a fairly new pressed sandwich shop. it was pretty good, though nothing amazing. then we strolled around ye olde manhattan, buying a couple things for mercer, of course, because he was such a good boy. mommy has been a good mommy, too, so she got herself a new pair of jeans. we also stopped by the location of mommy's big birthday celebration next weekend and ironed out the plans there. on the way back to the car, we passed by some bars showing the mets losing and the phillies winning the nl east, so that made daddy very happy.

the drive home was a bit slower, traffic-wise, but no big deal. once we got home we played with mercer a little bit and fed him some delicious pears, carrots, and rice cereal (next week: peas!). mercer is having his nightly feeding now and showing that bottle who's boss. we predict a good sleep tonight, as usual.

since mercer has been going to bed around 8:30, mom and dad have been able to watch a few movies at night. some recent ones include: jarhead (decent, too long), lonesome jim (pretty good, casey affleck is very good), and the departed (entertaining and some good twists; lots of blood. first time seeing it for mom, 2nd for pop).

also, after dealing with putting mercer in and out of the car seat these past few weeks, we remembered a nickname we've been calling him a lot: pencil legs! he puts up some resistance to the car seat and straightens his legs very tightly. once he's in, he loves it, of course, but he straightens his legs in all kinds of situations; he points his toes down so they look like sharpened pencil points!

out and about.

we weren't sure we were going to post on the weekends, but pop has some time tonight, so why not?

mercer and pop watched chelsea play a poor game of soccer this morning, tying lowly fulham 0-0. before mercer was born, this may have ruined pop's entire weekend, but now, just a quick look at mercer's smiling giggle-face kept the rest of the day from going pear-shaped. plus, pop trimmed mercer's claws, so that was a positive for the morning.

anyway, after the match, the family decided to go shopping for some clothing. we found mercer a few long sleeve onesies on sale at baby Gap and mom and pop managed to sneak a few things in for themselves, as well (not from baby Gap, of course). mercer was so well-behaved the entire time. he was either playing with the silly bugs hanging from his car seat, napping, or looking around and smiling. he was hit on by every female we came across, as usual.

we came home for dinner and mercer ate his squash and pears. we think he's going to sleep pretty well tonight. he was very tired when we came back from our evening coffee walk. he gets giddy after the bath and right before feeding, but his eyes slowly close once that bottle is in his mouth.

a good day for mercer. tomorrow, we have a small trip to new york planned. mercer loves the big city and seeing all the sights (women). hopefully, the weather stays as nice as it was today. even a bit colder would be fine.

there's only a day or so left to vote in the latest poll. there will be a new poll question up soon!

nicknames.

it took us a while to start calling mercer by his given name. we don't know why. that's just the way it happened. we called him "baby" for the good part of two months. then we finally started calling him "mercer" after that. however, he's been given a slew of nicknames by his silly and smothering parents. here is a sampling of nicknames mercer has had to endure up until now:

mercer box, chief roundface, cuddler, beanbee, dumpling, grape face, mj, mercenary, sequel, riverdancer, bubbus, beanbus, baby, buddy, stinkus, poopsmith, mad scientist, juice box, pirate, one-eyed jack, mercer jack, merc (soft c)

pear boy.

today, mercer spent the day with mommy, being a good boy as she worked. mercer did the usual baby circuit training and practiced his spitting all day. mommy was feeding mercer water just before daddy got home from work and the first thing daddy was treated to was mercer barfing all over a stuffed turtle we use as a pillow! delicious! he does that from time to time and it's not much a concern. we don't mind cleaning up because all he does is smile. he even smiles when he throws up.

mommy fed mercer pears for the first time today (after he barfed)! i don't think he knows quite what to think yet, but he didn't spit them up. he just had a puzzled look on his face and then he swallowed. it's the first solid fruit we've ever fed him so i guess he's just filing it away in his food database. pop probably had the same look on his face the first time he tried rabbit, oxtail, or quail egg. it took some getting used to, but it's all delicious in the end.

we all went for a brief walk after a short and much needed rainfall. then we came home and relaxed and now it's time for the nightly feeding. daddy was making weird noises to mercer a few seconds ago and mercer responded by giggling away. it's hard not to play with mercer all night long because he loves any new sounds. it's a great rush to hear mercer giggle and you just want to keep him giggling. but, he needs his food and his sleep routine. such is life.

actually, mercer needs a big sleep tonight because he's getting a visit from our friend caroline tomorrow! apple picking might be in the cards after mercer and pop watch chelsea take on fulham at 10am. c'mon chelsea!

the quickest of posts.

mercer slept until 7am this morning and woke up, raring to go. he spent the day at day care because mommy had some important meetings to attend to in the office. he had a good day and was smiling, as usual, when we picked him up. when we got home, we fed him the usual combination of oatmeal, formula, and solid food (green beans today).

then, at 6, we were to meet some of pop's work friends just next door at the seafood restaurant. it was a fun time and mercer napped through most of it. when mercer woke up in the restaurant, everyone took turns holding and cuddling with him until he started fussing. mommy took him home (right next door!) and played with him in his walker and taught him with sea creature flash cards. daddy came home a half hour later and mommy had already bathed and dressed mercer, who appeared to be in giddy spirits.

mercer is now eating his nightly meal and is chowing down. he's also very tired and we think he'll put in a good night's sleep. it's what a growing boy needs.

the good boy.

today, mercer was very well-behaved, taking lots of long naps while daddy got a lot of work done. in addition to the normal baby circuit training (bumbo sitter, rocker, floor gym, walker, swing, etc.) that takes place, mercer and pop went for a walk at lunchtime for a sandwich. getting out of the house as much as possible is always a good idea for new fathers. not only are there plenty of compliments, but it keeps you sane.

when mommy got home, daddy started prepping dinner (spicy chicken sandwiches) while mommy fed mercer oatmeal (blah) and green beans, which produced an ear-to-ear grin. mercer loves his solid foods so far and we're all very lucky that mercer hasn't shown any food allergies as of yet. the running family joke is that mercer will eat food no matter how he gets it: breast-feeding, a bottle, a spoon, through a hole in an old gym sock...

mercer wore a brown and white striped onesie today and looked cute in it all day long. he's especially cute when he's napping on your chest and then all of the sudden, his head pops up and he looks you right in the eyes and giggles. he never stops smiling and more importantly, exploring. he grabs hold of anything he can get his hands on, which is an indication that mom and dad need to be extra careful from now on.

mercer is feeding on some formula right now and is again very tired. he woke up last night at 4am because he only had one ounce to eat before falling asleep. all in all, 7 hours of sleep on one ounce of food isn't too bad. pop thinks he'll eat more tonight, though.

who is the clean baby?

today, mercer spent the day at school (day care) while marm and pop were at work. every time we leave him, it's a little tough, but he's always smiling and there is always lots for him to do there. it's a joy to pick him up at the end of the day and see that he is still smiling.

once we got home, pop started dinner (baked pork with garlic roasted potatoes and a cucumber/tomato salad) and marm fed mercer some green beans, oatmeal, and formula. we want him to eat enough at around 5:30 so he lasts until we start his sleeping process, which usually begins around 8. lately, he's been getting fussy at around 7:30 so marm and pop play with him pretty aggressively to keep him occupied. tonight, we played around on the floor with some stuffed creatures. mercer giggles anytime we toss a stuffed animal on him or tap him with a stuffed paw. he pumps his arms and his legs go up and down. he tired of this after 10 minutes, so pop began to read a bunch of stories. together, mercer and pop read: "and to think I saw it on mulberry street," "the story of ferdinand," and the preface to tom colicchio's "think like a chef."

at around 8, mercer began rubbing his eyes and started to whine so marm went to prepare his evening snack while pop started the bath. marm is now feeding mercer and he is slowly falling asleep. we think tonight he will fall asleep before the feeding is over. that might not be good if he decides to wake up in the middle of the night to ask for more food.

mom and pop had a good, normal day. they got to see mercer's friend, sydney, who is as cute as ever and growing like a weed. pop needs to re-read his blog tomorrow morning to remind himself that the recycling needs to go to the street.

sleep tight.

welcome.

mercer jackson is online!

the mercer process is a simple blog for those of you who can't get enough of mercer jackson. marm (jill) and pop (chris) started their own off-line journal when mercer was four months old as a way to keep track of all of his achievements. after feeling good about keeping it up for over a month, marm and pop decided to share it with family and friends. "the mercer process" refers to what we call getting mercer ready for bed each night, which will be detailed in a future post. we actually call it "the process" (as in "are you ready to start the process, mercer?"), but we thought that by adding his name, we'd make it a little bit more fun.

the blog should be updated almost every night between 8 and 8:30pm. we hope it shaves ten minutes off of your work morning and puts a smile on your face. enjoy.
